If World War Three Broke Out Today, How Would We Be Told?
Today marks eighty years since Britain declared war over Germany, marking the start of World War Two.
As a result, Australia joined Britain in the allied force and the news of this was announced to the people of Australia on every radio station in the country with a formal speech by Prime Minister of the time Robert Menzies.
This got us thinking with the advancement of technology, how would we receive the news if a global scale war broke out in our modern age?
Dr Katina Michael from School of Computing and Information Technology at University of Wollongong joined Brooke and Natal on Talk and Toast to discuss this topic.
Katina discusses citizen journalism as the quickest way for wartime announcements to spread stating ‘it would come through social media feeds and we would be struggling to know whether this was the truth or not’.
In a world of Donald Trumps and fake news, Katina went on to mention ‘ we would have to wait until we found evidence’.
In a scary situation, we would be forced to assess ‘how powerful is the voice of the people during catastrophes and crisis?’ stated Katina.
While fortunately it has been decades since the world saw such violent conflict on a global scale, the future for technology and communication during warfare has hinted at becoming more sophisticated.
