Ethics in the Cyber Age
Biography: Katina Michael is a tenured professor at Arizona State University. She holds a joint appointment in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society and the School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering. She is the director of the Centre for Engineering, Policy and Society and the founding editor in chief of the IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society which will open its submission portal in the coming weeks. Katina researchers the social implications of emerging technologies.
The 8th Conference of the Australian Institute of Computer Ethics (AiCE) will be held at the Deakin Downtown Campus in Melbourne, 19th – 20th August, 2019.
AiCE began over 20 years ago as an organisation that sought to be broader than just a computer focus. Members included engineers, scientists, medical specialists and others who used information and communications technology (ICT) frequently in their professional lives, but would not qualify for membership of a professional ICT society. The conference series[1] in recent years has focused increasingly on cybersecurity ethics, whilst still being broad, inviting contributions on a wide variety of ICT ethics.
The Conference Theme: Ethics in the Cyber Age
The overall theme of AiCE 2019 will be to explore emerging themes and relationships between ethics, governance and emerging technologies.
Submissions are invited for the following five themes:
· Cyber Security
o Privacy and ethical issues relating to the use of cyber security;
o Drone Technology – the impacts of drone technology upon society;
· Community informatics
o What impact has social media and related systems had upon society;
o Developing systems now and into the future - how to ensure social values are properly addressed;
· Governance issues on the Internet
o Should the Internet and large IT organisations be controlled and if so how could this happen?
· Ethics of Big Data
o The impact that Big Data will have upon society and business.
· Ethics for professional societies.
[1] This conference is ranked ‘Australasian’ by Computing Research and Education (CORE2018), with the primary classification of ‘Information Systems’. Previously it was ranked ‘B’ by CORE.
