Workshop series: From smart to intelligent cities: A human-social choice ?
Smart cities of a digitalised society are envisioned as cyber-physical-human systems of sustainable economic growth that enhance human wellbeing. The grand challenge for designing and developing smart cities is to achieve mutually beneficial interactions between cyber and human systems where machines learn from humans and humans learn from machines. Theories of human behavior are traditionally context-dependent, specialised for economics, education, games, social interactions, management, etc. Smart cities, as cyber-physical-human systems, set a new context for modelling and understanding human-social behaviour at different levels - from neuro-cognition of individual choices to collective decisions and emergence in social networks at multiple time scales.
A series of Workshops is planned during 2021-2025 with the overriding question: How do we effectively combine human-social decisions/choices on individual, societal and institutional levels, to support development and design of smart cities?
Workshop - Fall 2021
Workshop format: Online. Each session is 2.5h. Following a short introduction, three presentations of 30 min each (including 5 min immediate questions) would be followed by 1h discussion. The following sessions are planned:
Session 1 (September 6, 17-19:30 CEST or 11-13:30 EDT)
Interactional Intelligence: Social Networks and the Sustainable-Smart City. Social interactions, consumption in particular resource/energy use. What kind of experiments/data do we need to better understand choices/decisions in a smart city context from individual to societal levels?
Session 2 (September 13, 17-19:30 CEST or 11-13:30 EDT)
Reflective Intelligence: Individual Decision Making to Navigate the Sustainable-Smart City. Individual preferences and choices; basic social interactions; utilities and social norms; confidence and control. Which of the existing theories for human choices/decisions are suitable in the sustainable smart city context?
Session 3 (September 20, 17-19:30 CEST or 11-13:30 EDT)
Neuro-cognition: Neural perspective of individual choices and human-social behaviour. Decision-making, cognitive architectures, long- and short-term memory, learning and risk-taking. How to reconcile a neurocognitive perspective of individual goal-directed behaviour with interactive socio-economic decision-making to explain human-social choices in a smart city context?

About the project
The research team have the ambition to develop a new research area in urban development (studies).
Wellbeing in smart cities is the defined research area, focusing on interactions of human-machine computers or ”cyber-physical-human systems”, based on human decision making on an institutional, individual and neurological abstraction level. The smart cities of the future is our main application area as these are complex cyberphysical- human systems. The project will develop a framework for capturing interactions and dynamics in these systems and demonstrate the applications in user case studies.
Background
The health condition of a human being is the basis of individual and social wellbeing. The driving force for human-social behavior and many choices made by individuals is the desire for well-being and this will be manifested in the future, smart cities. Feedback and interactions in smart cities are carried out by networks, by human agents, by cyber agents and physical infrastructure. The smart cities can efficiently and sustainably increase the human wellbeing.
