Does ChatGBT threaten the future of screenwriters ?

February 16, 2023 - 21:19 Abu Dhabi time

Mustafa Seif - Sky News Arabia

Artificial intelligence may creep into creative professions

Chat GBT has penetrated everything related to the creative professions, until it threatens a wide range of songwriters, poetry, short stories, and even screenwriters.

It is true that he produces short texts; However, he sounded the alarm about what a robot can do in the world of creativity.

And between supporters and opponents, the debate raged among the scriptwriters , at the global level, about the impact of the nascent artificial intelligence tool on their work, and how to avoid losing their business because of this tool whose features are not yet clear, and ignited technical wars between the giants of technology companies.

The Hollywood Reporter explains: "Leading film and television writers question the ability of technology - in its current state - to threaten their livelihoods, but warn about its development in the future."

• In November 2022, DeepMind succeeded in inventing an artificial intelligence tool that can help write scripts for movies and plays.

• The tool bears the name "Dimatron", which can create descriptions of the artistic character and create a dramatic plot in addition to the text of the dialogue, in addition to specifying the specifications of the filming locations.

• As an experiment, one of the people supplied the new tool with a movie idea so that the script could be produced in a logical, but banal way.

Somewhat scary

The American screenwriter, John August (screenwriter of the movie Big Fish), said in the "Script Notes" podcast that discusses the screenwriting movement in the world, that "we must think about how to use artificial intelligence tools in a way that develops art and not restricts it," stressing that "He's not bothered by Chat GBT's involvement in the screenwriting work, he might offer plot ideas, or character, maybe name suggestion."

While the former head of the Writers Guild of America, Howard Rodman, indicates that he might use the bot to suggest an idea that he would never have thought of, but at the same time he describes "the future development of (ChatGBT) as somewhat scary."

The Hollywood Reporter notes that "there is still no copyright protection for texts generated by the use of artificial intelligence, because intellectual property law does not recognize the ownership of robot content creators."

• In 2018, Imagination Engines CEO Stephen Thaler attempted to include an AI system as the creator of an artwork called Modern Entrance to Heaven.

• Thaler has registered himself as the copyright owner.
• The US Copyright Office refused to register it as an intellectual property right.
• The office justified the refusal by saying that "the artwork lacks the human authorship required for its registration."
• The US office said: "We do not wish to deviate from a century of copyright jurisprudence."

Human imagination is limitless

"Nothing can replace human imagination," says Katina Michael, a professor of artificial intelligence at Arizona State University.

In exclusive statements to Sky News Arabia, she points out that "artificial intelligence may provide more descriptive details of the plot or character, and it can reintegrate the knowledge already available in new ways."

She describes the concern of the scriptwriters as “conceptual and legitimate,” and adds: “They are not alone in this concern, but the interference of artificial intelligence in any profession that relies on creativity may constitute a tangible danger,” according to her expression, continuing: “The threat is not due to replacing one person with the superiority of another, but Due to the exclusion of man and the replacement of machine.

Some of the international screenwriters will be excluded that the "Chat GBT" cannot write sarcastic jokes or sarcastic sayings, but Michael believes the opposite.

The artificial intelligence expert explains: "Chat GBT can create jokes, by searching in the data it has, it can imitate or combine it together and put it in a new context, but it cannot create humor spontaneously or instinctively."

Combine classic scenarios

Alexis Kirk, an American screenwriter and researcher with artificial intelligence, tells Sky News Arabia that "artificial intelligence may play a role other than threatening screenwriters, as it can, for example, take a forgotten or classic scenario, for example (Casablanca movie, or Star Wars: A New Hope) and rewrite it with a whole new setting and set of characters, and he could do it in a way that we can't recognize," considering that this is his biggest fear "because it will be the measure of the production companies saving their costs."

"It should also be borne in mind that the results of artificial intelligence can be fed back to human writers to correct any writing problems," he explains.

He adds, “Within the next 5 to 10 years, we will have the synthetic tool that automatically converts a new novel into a draft screenplay. It may not be a good idea, but maybe it will be a usable first draft?”

And he added, "Within 15 years, in the TV writers' room, the number of employees can be reduced by 25 percent by adding two artificial intelligence tools."
And about the possibility of making sarcastic jokes and sarcastic sayings, he elaborates by saying: "However, there are two main obstacles to artificial intelligence and script writing. Artificial intelligence does not yet know what a human is, so script writers rely on models of themselves and those around them to create realistic interactions."

He justifies this by saying, "Simulating making jokes and acting like a human is difficult, and it is one of the long-term challenges for artificial intelligence. Another problem related to human behavior for script writing that artificial intelligence may not be able to is the complexity of the story in the script."

Content poverty

While the Spanish technical writer, Josep Sanchez, believes in exclusive statements to “Sky News Arabia” that “one of the biggest dilemmas of (Chat GBT) is the ability to create humor, as it is still far from keeping up with the individual and nuanced differences and the understanding of the context that it requires.” Human humor.

And he continues: “On the other hand, one of the biggest concerns in the entertainment industry is the possibility of artificial intelligence replacing human creativity in storytelling, because there is a concern that the content generated by artificial intelligence will become homogeneous and lack diversity in content.”

Regulations and laws

Nasser Al-Mady, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Colby University, Maine, USA, explains that "modern artificial intelligence tools such as (ChatGPT) can produce good texts within a few seconds, so workers in the entertainment industry may have to replace all their workforce with intelligence." artificial cost reduction.

And he points out in exclusive statements to "Sky News Arabia" that "while avoiding the threat of artificial intelligence tools to screenwriters, it can facilitate the task for them to write it, by providing quick ways to search for and explore ideas."

However, Al-Madi points out that "the problem with (GBT Chat) lies in the regulations and laws that should govern how to integrate artificial intelligence into our lives," as he put it.

And about the possibility of making sarcastic jokes, he added: “I have seen some funny jokes written by ChatGBT, but the question that I do not have an answer for is how many of these jokes come directly from a web page that the artificial intelligence tool copied directly, so the comedy comes from real experience.” GPT fetches are content trained.

Written interview:

1. How can artificial intelligence threaten the future of screenwriters?

Nothing can replace the human imagination. Certainly AI may be able to enhance stories written by screenwriters based on existing news, events, disinformation, stories, and even screenplays. AI can provide more descriptive detail to a plot, setting, or character; it can recombine existing knowledge in new ways. It can also help in the drafting process, generating images from ideas or text.

2. Why do screenwriters feel that ChatGPT may threaten their future if they are so creative?

Automating any vocation that relies on the written word may be a perceived risk by screenwriters, journalists, poets, and songwriters. The threat doesn’t come from replacing the human because of an equivalency in a craft, but from business models that disintermediate the human from a role they once previously held in a given process.

3. Can ChatGPT write sarcastic and funny jokes? Now or in the future?

Yes it can. But it depends on your definition of original. It can search databanks of jokes. It can mimic these, adapt these, or integrate them together or reposition them in a new context. But ChatGPT can’t develop humor spontaneous, innately or in a self-aware manner. It cannot validate that something called a joke is even a joke that will evoke laughter in a human.

4. What are the biggest fears of ChatGPT you're noticing recently?

ChatGPT fears include: Microsoft’s Bing will replace Google’s Chrome; it’s the end of coding and will propel cybercrime and hacking; it’s the end of math; it will cause major problems in the creation of patents and in the context of litigation; it’s the end of student take-home assignments and school homework; ChatGPT is more eloquent than most University students; humans won’t be needed for a great number of job types (e.g. journalism will be automated on primary and secondary sources of evidence); humans won’t use or develop some of their faculties (thought, imagination and memory) because they will rely on ChatGPT;  etc.
